What Equipment or Software Do I Need for Virtual Yoga Teacher Training?

One of the most common concerns prospective students raise often quietly is: “Do I need special equipment or expensive tech to do virtual yoga teacher training?”

The short answer: no.

The professional answer: you need reliability, simplicity, and intention not a studio-grade setup. As the founder of Lotus River Wellness, a fully virtual yoga education company serving military spouses, parents, and working professionals, I’ve built our program around one core principle:

If yoga teacher training requires luxury equipment, it excludes capable teachers. This article outlines exactly what you need (and what you do not need) to succeed in a high-quality virtual yoga teacher training, specifically within the LRW model.

The Essentials: What You Actually Need
  1. A Reliable Internet Connection

    1. This is the most important “tool” you’ll use.

    2. You do not need:

      1. Ultra-high speeds

      2. Special routers

      3. Studio-grade connectivity

    3. You do need:

      1. Stable Wi-Fi

      2. The ability to stream video and join live calls without frequent interruption

    4. Most students complete LRW training from home internet, base housing, or standard residential setups without issue.

  2. A Laptop or Tablet (Phone Is Not Ideal)

    1. While some content can be viewed on a phone, teaching and learning require more visibility.

    2. Recommended:

      1. Laptop or tablet with a built-in camera

      2. Ability to type assignments and access course materials comfortably

    3. At LRW, students regularly submit:

      1. Written reflections

      2. Teaching assignments

      3. Video practicums

    4. A larger screen matters for your own learning and professionalism.

  3. Video Conferencing Software (Provided & Simple)

    1. Most virtual YTT programs, including LRW, use live video platforms such as Zoom for:

      1. Live classes

      2. Teaching practicums

      3. Community calls

      4. Mentorship sessions

    2. You do not need a paid account. You do not need to be tech-savvy.

    3. If you can join a meeting and turn on your camera, you are fully qualified.

  4. A Quiet Practice Space (Not a Perfect One)

    1. You do not need:

      1. A home studio

      2. Large open rooms

      3. Perfect lighting

      4. Silence at all times

    2. You do need:

      1. Enough room for a yoga mat

      2. The ability to move safely

      3. A space where you can focus during live sessions

    3. Many LRW students practice:

      1. In living rooms

      2. In bedrooms

      3. In shared homes

      4. With kids or pets nearby

    4. Real teachers come from real environments.

  5. Basic Yoga Props (Minimal & Accessible)

    1. At Lotus River Wellness, we intentionally teach prop-accessible yoga.

    2. Recommended basics:

      1. Yoga mat

      2. 2 yoga blocks (or thick books)

      3. A strap (or belt/towel)

      4. Blanket or pillow

    3. You do not need to buy everything at once and alternatives are always welcome.

What You Do Not Need (Despite What Marketing Says)

You do not need:

  • A ring light

  • A professional microphone

  • A studio backdrop

  • Matching outfits

  • Filming equipment

  • Expensive apps

If a program implies these are required, it is prioritizing appearance over education.

At LRW, we teach how to teach yoga not how to perform online.

Software and Platforms Used at Lotus River Wellness

Our students use:

  • A learning portal for coursework and recordings

  • Zoom for live instruction and teaching practice

  • Standard document tools (Google Docs, Word, or PDFs)

Everything is:

  • Provided or clearly guided

  • Designed for non-technical users

  • Accessible from anywhere

If you can check email and join a video call, you can succeed in our program.

Why LRW’s Simplicity Is Intentional

We serve:

  • Military spouses navigating deployments and PCS moves

  • Parents balancing caregiving and education

  • Career-changers rebuilding confidence

  • Students in transition, not ideal conditions

Our goal is not to test your tech skills. Our goal is to prepare you to teach yoga ethically, safely, and confidently, in any environment.

This philosophy aligns with professional standards recognized by Yoga Alliance, while remaining human-centered and accessible.

If you have:

  • Internet

  • A device with a camera

  • A mat

  • Willingness to learn

You have everything you need to begin.

Virtual yoga teacher training should open doors not create new barriers.

At Lotus River Wellness, we remove the noise so you can focus on what actually matters: becoming a capable, confident yoga teacher wherever life has placed you.
